| then can be tricky. Your best bet is to put in the time and use Search for "tick" or "knock" or "lifters" or "VTC springs" or "bearings . . ." for starters. I always say every bad sound coming for the engine deserves a pull of the timing belt cover. Considerations include whether or not the sound gets worse under load, decel, cold start, how the engine is otherwise running, effect of oil addivitives, whether you think the noise is coming from the top (valve train) or bottom (bearings) . . . If you're saying the sound is loudest @ 2500 and then fades out under power hopefully your "just" dealing with a bad lifter.
